Bahá’í Reader 0.1.8: a Today view for the Badí‘ day

· 3 min read

Bahá’í Reader, the offline prayer book and Writings reader for Linux, now has a place to start the day. Version 0.1.8 adds a Today view that gathers the Badí‘ date, the sun, your obligatory prayer, the next Feast and Holy Day, the Fast and the passage of the day on one page. Everything is worked out on your machine; nothing is looked up online.

Today

Today is the new first entry in the sidebar. It shows the Badí‘ date, sunrise, noon and sunset, when your obligatory prayer falls, the next Feast and Holy Day, the Fast, and the passage of the day as a card. In the sidebar it also lists the next twelve months and this year’s months.

New installs open on Today. If you already use the app, it keeps your place. Ctrl+T and the Today button now open this view instead of jumping straight to the passage of the day, which lives on the page as a card.

Badí‘ dates come from the Universal House of Justice’s table for 172 to 221 B.E. Past that, the app says the dates haven’t been published yet rather than guessing.

Location, kept on your machine

Sun times need a place. Type a city and it’s found offline in a bundled GeoNames list, or enter coordinates yourself. Your location is never detected and never sent anywhere.

Where days and nights vary greatly, Clock times lets you enter the hours your National Spiritual Assembly uses, and those replace the sun. The app has no clock times of its own.

Obligatory prayer, the counter and the Fast

  • Prayer times and Said today: the times come from the bundled texts, and you can mark the prayer as said. For the Long Obligatory Prayer you choose which twenty-four hours count, because no text says and no ruling has been made. Sunset to sunset is the default.
  • Alláh-u-Abhá counter (Ctrl+Shift+A), shown with Kitáb-i-Aqdas ¶18.
  • The Fast: the day, the fasting hours, and an optional private Fasted today check.

Reminders, off until you want them

Reminders cover the obligatory prayer, Feasts, Holy Days and the Fast. They’re all off by default. If you turn them on, you can also opt in to keep them running when the window is closed.

A tidier header

The Aa menu now holds only reading settings. Languages & offline libraries and About moved to a new ⋮ menu, alongside Location & reminders and Keyboard shortcuts. F1 still opens About.
